A exposição Insurgências – Vanguarda Feminista da década de 1970: obras da COLEÇÃO VERBUND, Viena apresenta cerca de 60 obras de arte feminista dos anos 1970 pertencentes à coleção vienense, complementadas por trabalhos do acervo do MAC USP. A mostra examina a construção da feminilidade e explora o significado de ser mulher na década de 1970. Ela expõe estereótipos e clichês e demonstra como artistas mulheres, pela primeira vez na história da arte, criaram uma nova e fundamental “imagem da mulher” a partir de uma perspectiva feminina — subversiva, irônica e radical.
Gabriele Schor, diretora fundadora da VERBUND COLLECTION, Viena, cunhou o termo “Feminist Avant-Garde” para destacar as conquistas pioneiras dessas artistas. Com o lema “O privado é político”, as integrantes desse movimento denunciaram, por meio de suas obras, a desigualdade social, as estruturas de poder patriarcais e o sexismo. Muitas artistas adotaram novas mídias, como fotografia, cinema, vídeo e performance. A fotografia, em especial, ofereceu-lhes uma nova liberdade de criação espontânea, além do meio da pintura, frequentemente marcado por códigos masculinos. Por meio da ironia e da provocação, essas obras expressam uma poderosa autoconfiança feminina, desafiando papéis e estereótipos existentes. A exposição reúne artistas da Europa Ocidental e Oriental, bem como das Américas do Norte e do Sul e da Ásia.
A VERBUND COLLECTION, Viena, foi fundada em 2004 pela empresa austríaca de energia VERBUND, em Viena. A VERBUND AG é a principal produtora de eletricidade a partir de energia hidrelétrica na Europa e também atua no campo das energias renováveis. Essa prestigiosa coleção corporativa, com foco internacional em arte contemporânea, reúne mais de 1.000 obras de cerca de 250 artistas. Desde 2010, a exposição Feminist Avant-Garde percorre instituições europeias em diferentes apresentações. A mostra no MAC USP marca a primeira etapa fora da Europa.

The exhibition Insurgencies – Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s: Works from the VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna presents around 60 works of feminist art from the 1970s from the Viennese collection, complemented by artworks from MAC USP’s collection. The show examines the construction of femininity and explores what it meant to be a woman in the 1970s. It exposes stereotypes and clichés and illustrates how women artists, for the first time in the history of art, created a fundamentally new “image of the woman” from a female perspective—one that was subversive, ironic, and radical.
Gabriele Schor, founding director of the VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna, coined the term “Feminist Avant-Garde” to highlight the pioneering achievements of these women artists. With their rallying cry “The privat is political,” the artists of this movement denounced social inequality, patriarchal power structures, and sexism through their work. Many women artists embraced new media such as photography, film, video, and performance. Photography in particular offered them a new freedom to create spontaneously, beyond the often male-coded medium of painting. Through irony and provocation, these works express a powerful sense of female self-confidence, challenging existing role clichés and stereotypes. The exhibition includes artists from Western and Eastern Europe, as well as North and South America and Asia.
The VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna, was founded in 2004 by the Austrian energy company VERBUND in Vienna. VERBUND AG is Europe’s leading electricity producer from hydropower and is also committed to renewable energy. This prestigious corporate collection, with its international focus on contemporary art, comprises more than 1,000 works by around 250 artists. The Feminist Avant-Garde exhibition has toured European institutions in various presentations since 2010. The exhibition at MAC USP marks the first stop outside of Europe.

A exposição Insurgências – Vanguarda Feminista da década de 1970: obras da COLEÇÃO VERBUND, Viena é resultado de anos de diálogo entre o MAC USP e a curadoria dessa notável coleção dedicada à produção de artistas mulheres ao redor do mundo nos anos 1970. A exposição chega a São Paulo em um momento significativo para o Museu: desde 2020, o acervo vem sendo reavaliado para evidenciar questões candentes da contemporaneidade, como se observa na atual mostra Tempos Fraturados. Nesse sentido, Insurgências funciona como um complemento essencial ao processo de revisão historiográfica que, sobretudo no Brasil, tem ampliado as abordagens feministas e de gênero.
As 60 obras reunidas partem de um recorte que destaca artistas mulheres atuantes na Áustria — país de origem da COLEÇÃO VERBUND AG —, no Leste Europeu, na Itália, no Japão e nos EUA, estabelecendo diálogos com obras selecionadas do acervo do MAC USP. A escolha reforça e expande pesquisas desenvolvidas pelo Museu desde pelo menos 2009, envolvendo a chamada coleção de arte conceitual e o expressivo conjunto de obras italianas, além de iniciativas de resgate da produção de mulheres na história da arte brasileira. No que diz respeito às artistas mulheres, busca-se também resgatar a história do MAC USP nesta chave, ao destacarmos que um marco desse movimento, no Museu, foi a exposição American Women Artists (1980), com curadoria de Regina Silveira, Mary Dritschel e Glenna Park, (a primeira mostra dedicada a artistas dos EUA na instituição).
A década de 1970 foi atravessada, em diversos países — entre eles Brasil, Itália, nações do Leste Europeu e grande parte da América Latina —, pela consolidação de regimes de exceção. Nesses contextos, o controle sobre os corpos e comportamentos das mulheres caminhava lado a lado com a repressão a outras formas de diversidade, incluindo questões de gênero e raça, refletindo-se no cerceamento político e no ataque às estruturas democráticas. Assim, mesmo com realidades distintas, muitas das proposições apresentadas nesta exposição ecoam preocupações que também mobilizaram artistas latino-americanas e brasileiras, como visto na célebre mostra Mulheres Radicais (2018–2019), com curadoria de Andrea Giunta e Cecília Fajardo-Hill.
Portanto, o público poderá conhecer obras fundamentais surgidas no calor das transformações impulsionadas pelo debate feminista nessas regiões. Entre elas, destacam-se trabalhos das austríacas VALIE EXPORT e Renate Bertlmann, da italiana Gina Pane, da polonesa Anna Kutera, além de um vídeo inédito da norte-americana Howardena Pindell, entre outras artistas centrais para as histórias da arte de seus países.

The exhibition Insurgencies – Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s: Works from the VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna is the result of years of dialogue between MAC USP and the curatorship of this remarkable collection, which is dedicated to the production of women artists around the world during the 1970s. The exhibition arrives in São Paulo at a significant moment for the Museum: since 2020, the permanent collection has been undergoing a re-evaluation to highlight burning contemporary issues, as seen in the current exhibition Fractured Times. In this sense, Insurgencies… serves as an essential complement to the process of historiographical revision (particularly in Brazil) that has been expanding feminist and gender-based approaches.
The 60 gathered works stem from a selection that highlights women artists active in Austria—the home country of the VERBUND COLLECTION AG—Eastern Europe, Italy, Japan, and the USA, establishing dialogues with selected pieces from the MAC USP collection. This choice reinforces and expands research developed by the Museum since at least 2009, involving the so-called conceptual art collection and the significant group of Italian works, alongside initiatives to recover the production of women in Brazilian art history. Regarding women artists, we also seek to reclaim MAC USP’s own history through this lens, noting that a milestone of this movement at the Museum was the exhibition American Women Artists (1980), curated by Regina Silveira, Mary Dritschel, and Glenna Park (the first show dedicated to US artists at the institution).
The 1970s were marked in several countries—including Brazil, Italy, Eastern European nations, and much of Latin America—by the consolidation of authoritarian regimes. In these contexts, the control over women’s bodies and behaviors went hand-in-hand with the repression of other forms of diversity, including issues of gender and race, reflecting political restrictions and attacks on democratic structures. Thus, despite differing realities, many of the propositions presented in this exhibition echo concerns that also mobilized Latin American and Brazilian artists, as seen in the celebrated exhibition Radical Women (2018–2019), curated by Andrea Giunta and Cecília Fajardo-Hill.
Consequently, the public will have the opportunity to discover fundamental works created in the heat of the transformations driven by feminist debate in these regions. These include works by Austrians VALIE EXPORT and Renate Bertlmann, by the Italian Gina Pane, the Polish artist Anna Kutera, and a previously unseen video by the American Howardena Pindell, among other artists central to the art histories of their respective countries.
