Single Women Nation: Sea of Textiles in the Sahrawi Refugee Camps (1975-1991)

Sergio Perdiguer

Aside from the women’s faces and their vertical firearms, which resemble an erection between their legs, Gérald Bloncourt’s May 1976 series of photographs in a Sahrawi refugee camp captured only a sea of textiles. These images were taken in southwest Algeria shortly after the Western Sahara-Morocco war broke out, following Spain’s sudden withdrawal from its colony in November 1975. Around one hundred thousand women lived in the camps for fifteen years, enduring uprooted, temporary to permanent solitude while their husbands fought on the battlefront. In this image, the khayma (Arabic for tent) appears to be an extension of their melhfas (Arabic for Saharan veil), sheltering the interior figure and concealing their solitude, thus creating the conditions for an alternative form of female kinship. Women seem to be defending themselves while also protecting one another. This conflation of tents and veiled single women contributed to a fictional, architectural, and media-driven campaign designed to legitimize the Western Saharan nation in Western discourse, a strategy that might be termed feminationalism. Here, a contemporary melhfa from Laayoune, Western Sahara’s capital, acknowledges its ongoing legacy and veils the photograph which is impossible for us to fully comprehend.
