Domestic Dissonance: The Play of Single Fantasy
Luna Eaton Sharon
Brothels in Nevada—the only state in the US where they can legally operate—are controlled by state, county, and town laws which regulate the physical space of the brothel as well as the bodies inside. The spaces in these brothels allow for and hold enactments of single anonymity. In the brothel, a physically bordered space is created within which the sex worker and their client perform a play of coupling. Domestic spaces within the brothel are manufactured. An abstraction of domestic familiarity occurs, a sort of spatial dissonance. The brothel contains spaces as in a typical home—bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms, kitchens, laundry rooms. However, unfamiliar additions to this domestic landscape are added. A stripper pole in the living room, a bar attached to the kitchen, ceilings painted to mimic Greek temples or Italian frescoes, bathrooms with hot tubs and “blow job showers.” The objects of sex work seep into the familiarity of the home. The brothel is not recognizable as a space easily defined by use. Women live here, men visit, and within the walls of the building, the two are constructed as alone, so as to be able to participate in a coupling.
