The Angel’s Home: A Cosmonaut Stranded on the Mir
Claudio Palavecino Llanos
In December of 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. The fall of its economy was echoed in the once powerful Soviet Space Program, where resources were reduced to the bare minimum. This scenario had a powerful impact on Sergei Krikalev, a cosmonaut working in the Mir Space Station during this period, who was left stranded in the stratosphere until the agency could finance his return. Orbiting around the Earth, the cosmonaut experienced deep isolation as a hostage with no option to escape, but also as the guardian of the Mir, the last remnant of the extinct Soviet power. These new circumstances made him turn the station into his home, a place in which running experiments, controlling vital systems and killing time by looking at the Earth became the new normality. In the mind of Galina Balashova, the only architect involved in the design of the Mir, the space station was not just a machine, but a place to feel like home. However, Krikalev’s new home was ruled by a different space-time, far from the conflicts that were reshaping the world, floating like an angel, free of everything except the weight of his own existence. After 311 days, Krikalev returned to Earth, now as a Russian man.
