An Archeological Environment in the era of the Great Contaminations
Andrea Comair
Produced for MoMA’s Italy: The New Domestic Landscape, in 1972, Paesaggio Domestico: Habitat for 2 People, Gaetano Pesce’s film forms part of a fictional archaeological reconstruction of a future civilization known as “The Period of the Great Contaminations.” The catalogue describes the work as the discovery of a small subterranean city in the Alps of Southern Europe, where inhabitants had retreated underground, sealing themselves from an uninhabitable exterior world. The short film, described as a recovered document only a few minutes long, records scenes of family life and was supposedly shot by one of the family members who lived inside the preserved dwelling. Presented alongside architectural fragments, models, and artifacts, the film gives evidence of a domestic existence shaped by isolation, anxiety, and ritual. Pesce transforms the home into a sealed habitat: part refuge, part tomb, part psychological chamber. Rather than imagining the “new domestic landscape” as a site of technological freedom, the film stages domesticity as withdrawal from contamination, communication, and collective life. It is a future ruin of the present.
