The Garçonnière in Brazilian Cinema
Rafael Vieira Blas
Garçonnière is a French term that, since the nineteenth century, has referred to small apartments occupied by single men in major cities around the world. A significant feature of urban culture not only in Paris but also in Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Rio de Janeiro, these apartments were closely associated with the social, bohemian, and sexual lives of upper- and middle-class men. Inhabited by bachelors, playboys, and adulterers—and, of course, by their partners, most often women—they were characterized by a degree of secrecy and by carefully designed interiors, featuring designer furniture, works of art, atmospheric lighting and rich textures, as well as the indispensable bar and stereo system. Drawing on the aura of seduction and eccentricity that surrounded these spaces, and reflecting their widespread presence in modern architecture and the real estate market during the second half of the twentieth century, Brazilian cinema reproduced them with remarkable frequency. It is difficult to imagine romantic life in Rio or São Paulo without the cinematic garçonnières of the 1960s and 1970s, nor the universe of characters and behaviors they accommodated. Within these interiors, solitude, pleasure, seduction, betrayal, jealousy, power, and transgression bear witness to broader transformations in subjectivity, emotional life, and ways of inhabiting urban Brazil.

A garçonnière no cinema brasileiro
Rafael Vieira Blas
