Pedro Meyer no acervo do MAC USP: o projeto Heresias
[english]

Far beyond appearances: Pedro Meyer’s critical image
Helouise Costa, Curator
[português]

As a photographer and cultural agent, the name Pedro Meyer is inextricably linked to the first attempts to establish an identity for the photography produced in Latin America between the 1970s and 1980s. Meyer was one of the founders of the Mexican Council of Photography, officially founded in 1978, and its first president. He was also involved in the organization of the already legendary Latin American Photography Colloquia, whose second edition, in 1981, posed the following question: “What is Latin American social photography and what could it be like?”. At that time, Pedro Meyer defended the organization of photographers in favor of a documentary production committed to denouncing the economic exploitation and political oppression faced by the local populations of different countries of the American continent.

This principle guided Pedro Meyer’s photographic practice for many years. The turn of the 1980s, however, would impose new challenges. The emergence of digital technologies and the new political situation in Latin America – with the end of dictatorships – contributed to the questioning of the assumptions and social function of engaged documentary photography. Meyer thus started to question photographic documentation through experiments, using cutouts, montages, insertion or suppression of elements, chromatic changes, among other resources.

As Joan Fontcuberta reminds us, every photograph is a manipulation. Framing is a manipulation, choosing the moment of shooting is a manipulation, as are all the various choices inherent to the photographic act. Thus, what should make us reflect is not manipulation itself, but the uses assigned to it. In the case of Pedro Meyer, the freedom offered by digital technologies intensified the subjective dimension of his production, allowing him to go far beyond the appearances of the visible world. The result is an updated answer to the question that guided his photographic production in the 1980s; a renewed commitment to the critical strength of images that incorporates fiction to explain the contradictions of contemporaneity.

Pedro Meyer in the MAC USP collection: the Heresies project
[português]

In 2008, Mexican photographer Pedro Meyer conceived the Heresies project to celebrate four decades of his activities in such profession. The idea was to carry out a retrospective that escaped the traditional molds and incorporated the possibilities offered by digital technologies in curatorial work. For such, Meyer invited ten curators from different countries (Mexico, Cuba, United States and England) to make a pre-selection of images among the approximately 250,000 images available in his virtual archive. With a set composed of 10,000 images, Pedro Meyer opened an international public call for institutions that wanted to join the project and present a curatorial outline of his work at their respective units. In total, 65 institutions around the world answered the challenge, including MAC USP. At the time, this strategy provided a new way of conceiving curation, no longer thought of as an isolated authorial work but as a shared and interactive activity, as each curator worked directly on the virtual database, engaging with the others.

As a result, in October 2008, each of the participating museological institutions inaugurated their own version of Heresies: a retrospective by Pedro Meyer. The title's “heresies” referred to questions about the tenets of documentary photography that have characterized Meyer’s production since the late 1980s. In addition to the exhibitions, the project involved the production of a book, an audiovisual piece and educational activities, not to mention the specific actions organized alongside the exhibitions. At MAC USP, the selection was under the responsibility of Helouise Costa, a curator who investigates the relationship between art and photography at the museum. At the end of the exhibition, 40 images were selected and became part of the MAC USP collection. The current exhibition – Far beyond appearances: the critical image of Pedro Meyer – gathers 27 works from this set, which are presented for the first time at MAC USP’s current host building.
